I have a handsome, extremely intelligent, inquisitive, kind, loving, and autistic son named CJ. As a baby I always had a hard time putting CJ to asleep. As an infant, he would stay up and cry ALL night long and he would be the first person awake in the house. I could never understand why he wouldn't fall asleep considering his older sister by 20 months didn't have the same issue. As CJ got older and his autistic symptoms and behaviors became more apparent, I began to attribute the issue to the Autism. Once again, I researched the "Autism" and "sleep" and came across a numerous amount of articles written by mothers who had the same issue. Most of them mentioned a vitamin called Melatonin.
"Melatonin is a
hormone made by the
pineal gland
, a small gland in the brain. Melatonin helps control your sleep
and wake cycles." WebMD
At this point in my life, I had never taken supplements for my own health and I was uncertain about giving it to my son. I sat on the information for a couple of months and then finally (after becoming desperate for sleep) I ordered my son his first bottle of
Natrol Melatonin from Drugstore.com.
It has been 8 years since the first time he has taken Melatonin and it has truly been a Godsend in my household. The entire household now has a regular sleeping routine that is not interrupted by night wakings.
